Please hire an experienced Landlord Tenant Attorney right away.  The local Police are generally not legally trained to determine what is required per Landlord Tenant Laws.  Please verify with an experienced Landlord Tenant Attorney what your duties are and what the Tenant's responsibilites are.

i have a tenant in my garage apartment. over the weekend i noticed a terrible smell in my garage.  i tried calling her and she did not return my calls.  long story short the police came as the smell was getting unbearable.  they entered the apartment and it is uninhabitable.  her electric was off for non-payment, spoiled food in the fridge, and her dog had destroyed all the furniture and was urinating in the heating vent.  the officer told me that i may have to pay for housing since she will have no place to live (of her own doing).  is this correct? i live in new jersey
