If the lines (or line) worked before, then they should work now.  Ask the owner if any of the lines worked before and if so, what was the phone number.  the phone company can trace the lines better that way.  It could be that the previous people used a different vendor/company and that is why they recommend re-wiring, the configuration is different and their jacks or computer won't work with their lines.  But if at least one jack worked before then nothing is wrong with the wiring.  If the place is new and has never had a phone there should be a warranty.  Get the old phone number (if there was one) and call others companies who provide this service.  Also, talk to the maintenance man at your condos, see what he knows.  Pat

I just moved into a condo a month and a half and none of the phone jacks have a dial tone.  I had the repair man come out and he said that the inside wiring needs to be replaced.  The owner feels that the phone company should fix it should the wish to continue providing service to his building.  I feel  that since the property does not belong to me I should not be responsible for such costly repairs.  Moreover , I feel it should have been in working order before I arrived so it should not be my duty to get it up and running.  Where do I stand on this legally?

You only have to provide 1 working jack.  If tenants want more, they can put them in at their expense.

I currently have a rental property and am using a property management company. I was just sent a quote to have 4 more phone outlets put in the house, it currently has 1. Is it the responsibility of the landlord to furnish more outlets than there was when they moved in?
