| It is not your responsibility to keep your door unlocked and it is unreasonable to expect a tenant to do so. I would also be concerned that the landlord does not feel comfortable giving his own key to the home to a maintenance man...doesn't he trust them?

My landlord is finally getting my duplex inspected after repairs and asked my neigbor and myself to leave house unlocked. He has a key but doesn't want to leave it for anyone else. (not even maintence guy).
My son must have accidentally locked it behind me this morning, but the landlord says the inspector will fine us $50 if it is locked the next time he comes out. I don't think this is my problem. He has a key and he needs to lock and unlock it for the inspector. I also don't think it is smart of me or responsible to leave my home unlocked. Can he require me to leave it unlocked or fine me if i don't? Not to mention, it should have been inspected before we even moved in. That part has been a nightmare, another story.
