| I have a LL that rented my family an apartment knowing my husband and I were smokers even though it was a non smoking unit. Now she says the apartment smells like smoke and that I have to remove the smell at my expense including but not limited to washing walls, woodwork, carpets and windows also that I may have to paint all walls, ceilings and woodwork until the smell is gone. This is a four bedroom duplex. Some of the furniture I have currently is from my previous residence in which I was able to smoke freely and probably does smell of smoke to some degree. I have only lived at this residence for 41/2 months and am moving. Can the LL charge me all of these expenses for a smell that does not even exist? When we wanted to move in early she told us she wanted to paint the apartment first but said that we could do so in the spring if we wanted and she would pay for materials. I think she is trying to get the entire apartment painted at my expense. I live in NH, what can I do?
