| Yes, you have the right to a lock on your room to secure your belongings. However, the LL must have a key to that lock in case of an emergency. I suggest you request a lock from the LL. Put the request in writing, send it certified or regular mail -get deliver confirmation though, and keep a copy. If he won't install it, ask if you can. This is an easy fix. The door handle need only be removed and replaced with a keyed entry handle. If the same brand of handle is purchased, it requires only 2 screws. 10 minute job tops. Cost about $20.

I live in a 6-bedroom apartment in California. The landlord individually rented out each of the rooms---meaning, we each signed contracts and none of us co-signed a contract together. The kitchen, laundry room, dining room, and bathrooms are shared among us all.
Do I have a right to have a lock on my bedroom door? If my roommates are inviting people I do not know/trust into the apartment, it seems fairly obvious to me that I should be able to lock my room.
Thanks.
